Sleep is 4 Suckers Book Club

So hopefully you all enjoyed the last book selection, Who Moved my Cheese? It taught me that I shouldn't be afraid of change, and to accept the fact  that I will have to adapt myself to the changes that may occur in my life. Being stuck won't get you anywhere, and the quicker you learn that the faster you will find your "cheese". So on to the next book, The Richest Man in Babylon. Our October book will touch on financial topics through parables set in ancient Babylon. If you haven't purchased the book now, what are you waiting for? It's a small investment in yourself that is priceless, and your returns will be beyond what you you can imagine.

Look at it this way, you should have more books on your bookshelf then channels on your TV.

The Truth About YOU

Recently I was examining myself trying to figure out exactly who I am. I didn't really know, and I thought it would be a hard task trying to figure it out, and I put it off. Fast forward to tonight. I was watching my old recordings on my DVR and I came across this episode from the OWN Channel called Iyanla, fix my life. As you could guess it's about Iyanla helping people fix problems in their life, and this episode just so happened to feature Evelyn Lozada from Basketball Wives. Iyanla kept asking Lozada "who are you?", and Lozada didn't really know how to respond in the beginning. After a long heart to heart Evelyn was able to answer the question, but I could tell she was just barely scratching the surface on finding out who she really is. I knew then it was time to get to brainstorming and trying to pinpoint exactly who I am because I didn't want to be in my mid-life and have a false sense, or no sense at all, about who I was.  However, with no idea as to where to start, I figured I'd start jotting down the person who I want to be and tie that to who I believe I am now--since I'm obviously it's not going to be the same. Looking at it from that perspective made it a lot easier for me to say "I am...", and there I had a mini revelation and saw the truth of me.

It's so hard for us to get the courage to actually acknowledge and accept our personal truths because some people simply don't want to face reality. Everything can't always be smoke and mirrors because that's not the way to enjoy life. Think about it. If we keep on putting up a facade for people to believe then we are putting out a lie to the universe. When you lie to the universe you are lying to yourself, and not being honest to yourself is one of the worst things you could do. So in an effort to be truthful to yourself I challenge you to follow my footsteps and write down your truths in the format of 'who I am vs. who I want to be'.

Don't know how or where to get started? Just take a look at my list below and form your own personal truths. Keep the list and change it as you grow.

Who Am I?                      vs.                                Who I Want to be
Child of God.....................................................Woman of God
Blogger..............................................................Respected writer
Lover..................................................................Wife
Young in experience.........................................Young at heart but wise w/ experience
Working on selflessness..................................Ready to serve w/o thinking about what it'll cost me
Afraid of success b/c idk how to handle it..........Successful and use it for the better good
Easy to anger & forgives but not forget...........Slow to anger & always forgiving and letting go

So with all that I know who I am. I am me, even though it's not all that I want to be. However, with that powerful knowledge, I'll be able to be confident in everything that I choose to do in my life. Now isn't that peace of mind?

Envision.

 Reaching Goals

Imagine that everything that you have worked for has paid off. Picture yourself reaching the goals you've set, and then envision yourself surpassing even you own expectations. Now how does that feel? It's like an indescribable wave of amazingness just passed through you! It feels awesome when you're only imagining it, so think about how it will feel when it eventually happens to you. Until then, you can keep that feeling in the back of your head to remind yourself of what it feels like to win so that you will keep on wanting to win. After a while of working hard to reach a goal we forget why or what we even want. We even go as far as to give up on winning because we forgot how it feels. So let's not get into the slumps on our journey to the top. Envision the feel of victory, and pretty soon it will be yours.

Appreciation vs Attachment

The following is something I found in my e-mail, and it helped clear up a few things that have been on my mind lately. Being gracious for something and appreciating it is way better than just having an attachment to it. Here's the reasoning behind that...

From The Secret Daily Teachings
There is a difference between feeling gratitude and appreciation for something, and feeling attachment to something. Appreciation and gratitude are states of pure love, while attachment contains fear - fear of losing or not having what you are attached to. When it comes to something you want in your life, appreciation and gratitude attracts, and attachment pushes away. If you are feeling afraid that you will not get what you want, or losing what you have, then you have attachment.
To remove the attachment, keep shifting yourself into a state of appreciation and gratitude, until you can feel that the fear has gone.
Just a little food for thought :)

Just in Case You Missed it...

So in case you were watching the rerun of the VMA's and not tuning into the President speak at the DNC, we're going to give you the benefit of the doubt and give you a chance to catch up. In addition to that, we at Sleep is 4 Suckers believe that everyone should be fully educated on the election, so I also posted Mitt Romney's RNC speech. It's your decision to make, but make sure you make it based on facts.

Side note: If you haven't registered to vote then you must do so before your states deadline (typically 30 days before election date). Click Here to register to vote before it's too late, and tell a friend to tell 3 friends to do so as well!

Introducing The Sleep is 4 Suckers Book Club!

I once heard somewhere (perhaps in yesterday's post) that average people would rather be entertained than educated, whereas rich people would rather be educated than entertained. Sounds silly, huh? Well think again! Why is it that just about every mansion has a library or a study with floor to ceiling bookcases? It's most likely because the wealthy owner has read an enormous amount of books to further his education, hence why he is so successful. You can't be dumb and wealthy, the two just don't go well together. It takes knowledge on every level to achieve some sort of success. Ever since I became aware of that, I made a vow to read more books, and what better way than to start a book club?!

I love to share the wealth; therefore, all of our followers and Night Crawlers will be able to read along with me. I'll post books up to the blog while I'm reading them, and then give you all a heads up on what's next on my to-read-list. Since this is all about furthering our education, there's only going to be books that serve a purpose other than to entertain. Just in case you are wondering, YES you do have to go out and buy or download these books. That way you can read them, learn from them, and build your own library with them! By reading, we gain knowledge. With knowledge we gain power. With power we rule the world! Hope you can keep up ;)

This Week's Si4S Book Club Pick is...

Who Moved my Cheese? ,by Dr. Spencer Johnson, is a tale of change and being prepared for change instead of being stagnant or unadaptive. It's one of those lessons that you thought you knew, but you weren't really putting it to use in your everyday life. Find out which character suits you best and figure out what you need to do to become a better you. Happy readings!

The Difference Between You and the Rich!

Ok, so maybe I'm over doing it on the Yahoo! articles, but who cares?! Here's another finance related article that was way too good to keep to myself, so I figured that I'd share it with you all. After reading this you should pretty much know what separates you from the wealthy. Instead of reposting the entire article, I listed the 21 highlights. You can check out the article in it's entirety on Yahoo! Finance .

7 Ways to Prepare for Retirement in Your 20s (Article from Yahoo Finance)

So I was browsing through Yahoo, looking for something amazing to post on our blog, and I come across this article on Yahoo about personal finances. I think it's very important to plan for the future, and the earlier you start, the better you will be prepared. I just posted the entire article below, so read it and take action on what the writer is saying.
The year you get your first full time job is the best time to start saving for your retirement. The power of compound interest will have much more time to work in your favor if you start investing as soon as you start making some money. However, most people in their 20s are way too busy to think about retirement.
Most of us have experienced the starving student lifestyle, and it was not fun. When your first paycheck rolled in, I'm sure you had a list of things to spend it on. Young people these days also have large student loans to contend with, and it's difficult to find any extra money to put toward retirement. I'm sure most new college graduates who just started a new job are not ready to even think of retirement. Most young people are focused on working and enjoying that money when they can.
Here are seven things 20-somethings can do to get ahead:
1. Avoid consumer debt. It's difficult to avoid debt at any age, but it's worth the effort to start out right. While young people often live in the moment and enjoy going out and having a good time, it is very important to spend less than you earn so you can avoid credit card debt. The interest will chip away at your income, and it will be much more difficult to save if you take on more debt.
2. Avoid lifestyle inflation. Most of us are unable to avoid lifestyle inflation after we start making more money. Who wants to drive an old jalopy around when a car dealer is offering a new car with a low interest rate? Spending money is fun and our consumer culture encourages that. However, it's difficult to reduce monthly expenses once they creep up. It's best to avoid lifestyle inflation as much as possible.
3. Grow your income. People in their 20s do not make as much money as older folks, but their compensation has a lot of room to grow. If you work hard, you should be able to get promoted and grow your income quite a bit early on in your career.
4. Sign up for a 401(k) account and start saving. A 401(k) account is a great retirement savings tool. Everyone should sign up even before their first paycheck rolls in if they can. That way your 401(k) contribution is automatically deducted from your paycheck and you won't see that amount in your checking account. This will help with lifestyle inflation because if you don't see the money, you won't be tempted to spend it. Start contributing right away and then increase this amount a little bit every year until you reach the contribution limit.
5. Open a Roth IRA. The best time to contribute to a Roth IRA is when you are in a low income tax bracket. The money invested in a Roth IRA is after tax, but you won't have to pay tax on any earnings.
6. Open a taxable brokerage account. It can be difficult to max out a 401(k) and Roth IRA. If you have any money left over after doing these two things, then consider opening a stock brokerage account. Investing in the stock market can be daunting when you are new to it, but you can start by investing in a low fee index fund. Once you learn more about investing, then you can branch out.
7. Buy income producing assets instead of a new car or other stuff that will break. Think about depreciation before spending money. If you buy a new car, it will be worth much less in a year. If you buy some dividend stocks instead, you will receive dividend income and the stocks might gain in value. Another example of an income producing asset is a house. You can buy a house and rent out some rooms to generate income to help pay the mortgage.
It's not easy to think about retirement when you are in your 20s, but your older self will be very grateful if you do so.
Joe Udo is planning an exit strategy from his corporate job by reducing expenses and increasing passive income. He blogs about his journey to early retirement at Retire by 40.
